Since 2020, the Illinois Limousine & Bus Association (ILLBA) has hosted their free, regularly held Coffee With ILLBA informational webinars to offer education and networking to operators from around the world. On October 14, the association held their latest online event, focusing on a new and somewhat unconventional topic: chauffeur health and fitness. ILLBA Executive Director Paula DeBiasi of Chicago Coachworks invited Physical Therapist Saker Ghanayem to present A Chauffeur’s Tune Up: Staying Fit While Driving, in which ways to keep drivers safe and minimize injuries were explored.

Acknowledging that driving long hours in often unideal, fixed positions is a major risk factor for injuries and stress, Ghanayem offered suggestions and solutions to avoid physical issues. For instance, during shifts drivers are encouraged to sit ergonomically and to take “micro breaks” that allow them to stretch or do neck rolls. Furthermore, lifting mechanics are important when handling often oversized luggage; in fact, there’s truth to the old saying “lift with your legs.” Ghanayem prepared a worksheet of 12 easy exercises specifically designed for chauffeurs that include stretch bands, lunges, squats, and basic yoga. DeBiasi will distribute the worksheet and session to any operators interested.
As with all Coffee With ILLBA webinars, the program was recorded and is available on the association’s YouTube channel.
The next webinar is scheduled for November 18, and ILLBA is planning an in-person breakfast meeting on December 16 at a location to be determined.
