On July 23-24, the Maryland Livery Association (MLA) held their first Summer Soiree golf tournament and learning event. Held at Turf Valley Resort in Ellicott City, networking and education opportunities were presented to the association. Sixty members and guests took part over the two days, including CD President Chris Weiss.
“I’m very proud of this terrific event,” says MLA President Len Joseph of On The Town Limousines. “It was exciting to see so many people engaged in our programming.”

The event kicked off on Wednesday, July 23, when a fleet of golf carts took to the country club’s outstanding course for the Livery & Links Invitational. Members, vendors, sponsors, and guests played a full round of golf under the sunshine. Prizes were awarded for lowest score and nearest-to-pin. The day concluded with a cocktail reception and a bar crawl through the streets of Baltimore.
“It was a gorgeous afternoon. The feedback I’ve received said it was an excellent course. It was just a perfect day,” adds Joseph.

Day two, which offered a full schedule of education, started at 9:00 a.m. with guest speaker Robyn Goldenberg of Strategy Leaders. She offered up a presentation on the importance of setting SOPs and learning to delegate tasks. Next, Eric Christiansen of Limo Anywhere spoke about the future of dispatching and adapting to modern technology. Following the lunch break, D.C. Department of For Hire Division Chief, Compliance & Enforcement Travis Nembhard addressed the operators about the regulations and enforcement related to working within D.C. city limits.

Next was a panel discussion about insurance and DOT compliance. Joining Joseph, who served as moderator, were Adam Weisman of Philadelphia Insurance, Dr. Jermaine Hunter of H3 Safety Consulting, and Sarah Parker from Chesapeake Employers Insurance Company, each offering their valuable perspective on this hot-button topic.
“This was an outstanding panel. We did an hour and a half and we could have easily doubled that. One of my main objectives was to focus on creating a culture of safety, and I was pleased with how engaged our group was. Insurance is one of the biggest line items on the balance sheet, so you really have to pay attention,” says Joseph.

“We were thrilled to have Jodie and James be part of the event. They really brought their A-game,” says Joseph.
After a break and open networking, the event came to an end with an MLA member appreciation cocktail party.
The next MLA event will be a general membership meeting on September 16 at Jimmy’s Famous Seafood in Baltimore.
