The Maryland Livery Association (MLA) returned to Jimmy’s Famous Seafood on April 7 for their latest membership meeting. Attracting 30 guests and members from across three states, the lunchtime event put a spotlight on a local operation and provided valued networking.

“I’m really proud that we welcome operators from region and beyond. The amount of participation and interest we’re seeing is fantastic,” says MLA President Len Joseph of On The Town Limousine.

The key focus for the meeting was a 45-minute presentation from DTS Worldwide President & CEO Mary Ganganna and Vice President Willie Cook, whose well-respected operation serves the Baltimore and Washington D.C. area. The pair shared an overview of DTS’s past, present, and future, as well as their current service offerings.

“They provided a good cross-section of where DTS is at and where they’re looking to go,” says Joseph.

Cook and Ganganna also shared about what DTS looks for when they acquire operations and how that’s helped the company evolve.

“It’s good for operators of all sizes to hear the different levels of evolution,” adds Joseph. “It was valuable to learn what DTS looks at when they’re buying and selling vehicles, as well as what comes into play when they’re hiring employees.”

Following the company spotlight, the MLA members discussed legislative issues involving illegal operators that have been plaguing the Baltimore/D.C. region. Also talked about were insurance issues, which is a common bugbear for the industry.

Joseph and the MLA board also highlighted the association’s 2nd Annual MLA Summer Soirée and golf outing, which will be held at Eagle’s Nest Country Club in Phoenix, Md. on July 20. Everyone is invited to the event, and the MLA is currently seeking sponsorships of various levels.

Lastly, Joseph and MLA Secretary General Japneet Suri of Executive CLS revealed that they will be donating bus services to the NLA Day on the Hill on April 14-15. They encouraged all MLA members to attend this important event.

“It’s just another small way that the MLA supports our national association and the industry at large,” says Joseph.

The next MLA meeting is scheduled for May 19 at Jimmy’s Famous Seafood.
