Remembrances and condolences are pouring in on social media after the sudden passing of MOTEV CEO Robert Gaskill on August 7.
Robert was a revolutionary leader in the transportation space, choosing to establish his company in Los Angeles, California, with a fully electric fleet in 2016—which, even today, stands as one of the only services in the state and the country that focuses first and foremost on the intersection of luxury and sustainability. He once told Chauffeur Driven: “Our priority is to the environment and to our customers. Serving each of them responsibly creates an ecosystem of sustainability.”
Robert’s interest in transportation actually arose from his work in Hollywood, where he met and befriended legendary actor Morgan Freeman in the mid-‘90s. As he told Fast Company in a 2017 profile on his company, the friendship led to Robert being a part of the actor’s security and travel detail as a bodyguard and frequent chauffeur. When Robert wanted to launch MOTEV, he had the full support—and financial backing—of the actor, who became a silent(ish) partner (Freeman’s investment was featured in several profiles of the company over the years).
Robert threw his heart and soul into the betterment and advancement of the chauffeured transportation industry, both in his state and nationally. He was highly involved with the Greater California Livery Association (GCLA), where he held several positions, including most recently as president.
He was also a proud member of the Teamsters Local 399, to which he belonged for more than 30 years.
No services were announced as of press time but will be updated when available.
Announcement from MOTEV:
We are deeply saddened by the passing of our business partner and friend, Robert Gaskill.
Robert built MOTEV on a foundation of expertise, innovation, and loyalty, drawing on over three decades of experience as Morgan Freeman’s trusted chauffeur. His vision for a greener, more purpose-driven approach to luxury transportation changed the industry and shaped our company’s identity.
We are standing together as his team during this incredibly difficult time. Robert would have wanted us to keep the wheels of his company moving. We extend our heartfelt condolences to all who knew and worked alongside him.
We will share memorial details soon, but in this moment, we invite you to honor Robert by remembering the integrity, creativity, and genuine care he poured into every ride and every relationship he touched.
From the GCLA:
Robert was a beloved board member and served as President of the GCLA, bringing insight, leadership, and a genuine commitment to excellence and innovation . He earned national recognition for his visionary approach to sustainable luxury ground transport—most notably by founding Motev as one of the first black‑car services in Los Angeles to operate with a fully electric fleet (including Teslas), setting a new standard for environmental stewardship and high‑end service in our field. …
Those who knew Robert remember him not only for his business acumen and pioneering spirit—but also for his warmth, integrity, and mentorship. He was a guiding voice in industry forums, conferences, and in leadership meetings with the GCLA, always eager to share best practices on operations, insurance, sustainability, staffing, and pricing in challenging times.
His passing is an immense loss—to his family, his loyal team at MOTEV, and to our broader limousine and livery community. Robert’s legacy of compassion, innovation, and service excellence will continue to inspire. We will honor his memory by carrying forward the values he championed: environmental responsibility, inclusivity, operational integrity, and a resolute focus on client safety and dignity.
