As part of an initiative to increase educational content among its membership, the New England Livery Association (NELA) hosted a workshop with Driving Transactions Principal Analyst Ken Lucci on Wednesday, May 14. Entitled Pricing to Profit and Prosper, the seminar attracted 40 attendees from New England (and beyond) to the Boston Winery in Dorchester.
“Participants brought laptops with them so they could access their own financials during the two-part presentation,” says NELA Executive Director Rick Szilagyi of Lexian Management. “Every single attendee voiced their appreciation for the incredibly valuable content Mr. Lucci shared throughout the day.”

Platinum Sponsor My Limousine Service and Bronze Sponsor Lancer Insurance were thanked by NELA President Brett Barenholtz of Above All/Maine Limousine prior to the workshop. Barenholtz served as the Master of Ceremonies for the day’s proceedings, introducing Lucci as guest speaker.
Lucci’s two-part presentation opened in the morning with a discussion on pricing for prosperity. Two complementary calculators were distributed to the attendees so that they could accurately see cost vs. pricing in terms of vehicles, labor, etc.

“This was an eye-opener for many of the participants,” says Lucci. “These calculators really make people think about how to move equipment profitably.”
The afternoon session dealt with selling value over price. Lucci’s goal was to teach operators to find the “5 W’s”—who, what, when, where, and why—when it comes to delivering service.
“We are exploding the myth that clients buy solely on the price of service,” adds Lucci.

Meanwhile, NELA is deep in preparation for their upcoming annual Chauffeur Appreciation Day on June 5 at the Logan Airport Limo Pool. This popular tradition sees the association board members and volunteers distribute a free BBQ lunch to chauffeurs from throughout the region. What’s more, Boston-area DJ Nick Lamberti is back to help us celebrate the chauffeurs, providing entertainment at the function. NELA is currently seeking sponsors for the event. Mosaic Global Transportation, based in San Jose, Calif., was recently announced as a finalist for the EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award for the Bay Area, which is presented by Ernst & Young.

According to the nomination criteria, the award “celebrates the bold leaders who disrupt markets through the world’s most ground-breaking companies, revolutionizing industries and making a profound impact on communities. The program honors bold entrepreneurs whose innovations shape the future and pave the way for a thriving economy and a hopeful tomorrow.”
Founded by Maurice and Rhonda Brewster in 2002, Mosaic Global has grown into one of the Bay Area’s most prominent companies. The company recently celebrated the culmination of a multi-year project that made significant strides not only toward a carbon-neutral facility but an electric fleet. Maurice detailed his impactful two-decade career in the industry with his life partner and company president Rhonda, as well as his bold vision for the future on episode 19 of the Ground Transportation Podcast, hosted by Ken Lucci and James Blain. Additionally, Maurice is also a founding member of the Minority Limousine Operators Association.
Regional winners of the award will be announced on June 13, after which they will be considered for the Entrepreneur of the Year National Awards, which will be presented in November at the annual Strategic Growth Forum, which Ernst & Young considers one of the nation’s most prestigious gatherings of high-growth, market-leading companies.
